Shoppe History
The Quilted Crow was launched as "The Quilted Garden", an online shop in July of 1999 -
starting out with 50 items in inventory.
Wendy Daugherty started the business out of her love for quilting, but in 2001, with 5 active
sons and a very successful growing business, Wendy decided to sell and focus her time on her
family. So in April of 2001, Wendy sold the
Garden to Marianne Kennedy."
In November of 2002 Marianne opened up the "brick and mortar" part of the shop in
Boxborough MA adjacent to a tea shop . . . what could go better than "tea and quilts"? (The
tea shop is now closed.) She changed the name to "The Quilted Crow"
to reflect her love of folk art.
In July of 2006 Donna Ellis and Linda Ficaro
purchased The Quilted Crow.

Donna's Story
I made my first quilt, a baby's quilt, while pregnant with my
youngest child in the early 1980s. My mother-in-law had made one for my
oldest child so in order to keep all things equal at least in the beginning I set out to learn
how to make a quilt for my youngest.
Even while caring for a toddler I had time to cut and sew the many little pieces into blocks and
the blocks into a quilt top. I worked tirelessly at the many quilting stitches that bound the
top, batting and backing together. I was glad to have a project to work on while the rest of my
family slept. I required very little sleep in my last trimester. My baby's
quilt was ready by the time she was born. I caught the quilting bug with that first experience.
Like many of you I love crafts because I love making things with my own two hands. I feel I have
accomplished something and used my time constructively. Over the years, my wonderful, supportive
husband has said to me as I complained about my current job, Follow your
passion! You love crafts! Open a craft store! The timing wasn't
right until my sister-in-law Linda informed me she was interested in buying a quilt shop only if
she could find someone to share the experience. I told her she found her partner!

Sue's Story
The charming warmth of quilts always attracted me and I envied those
families who possessed such heirlooms. In 1997 I realized I had more time to myself as my
son became more independent. I stumbled across HGTV's Simply Quilts and
convinced a friend to take a quilt class with me. The obsession birthed and grew quickly
with every quilt show and shop hop I could find!
At the urging of my quilt teacher, I joined one quilt guild and then a
second. (Once per month wasn't enough!) Family vacations always
included side trips to local quilt shops, much to my son's dismay! My
husband, Rick, feeds my addiction on a regular basis seeking out new shops for me to explore
where ever we go. He's a keeper!!!!!!! (The key is to feed him
well while traveling!)
Becoming an employee of The Quilted Crow in Jan. 2006 was such a
thrill! It wasn't work at all! (And to think I got PAID for it too!!!); Life was good! The wonderful
customers and friends that visit me at work make it most
enjoyable.
Donna's invitation to team up with her was an exciting
thought. Rick's strong support for this next step of my life made the
decision even more enticing. It's wonderful to be able to work at something I am so
passionate about!

Why Folk Art
Some of you may wonder why we have chosen to focus on folk art quilting.
That's a good question because there are many other styles of quilting just as
beautiful. But, we feel a strong love for folk art for its connection to our American history and
as an art form which represents generations who "learned at the knee."
For these reasons we offer you fabrics, quilt patterns, block-of-the-month-kits,
punchneedle supplies, needle felting supplies and kits, which reflect and exemplify folk art. Our
experienced and knowledgeable staff is available during business hours for assistance with
projects.
